Lost for Words - the debate 22 October, 6.30-8.30pm, Channel 4 Television London
I am delighted to invite you and people in your network to attend the Lost for Words Debate at Channel 4 on Monday 22 October 2007.
This autumn Channel 4 is running a major season highlighting the alarming levels of childhood illiteracy in the UK. At the heart of the season is a moving three-part documentary series following the experiences of an inspirational head teacher as she embarks on a drive to eradicate illiteracy in an East London primary school.
Last Chance Kids follows the head’s determined efforts, over the course of a year, to give her pupils – who live in one of Britain’s most deprived areas – a chance. The programme shows how by going back-to-basics, using synthetic phonics, by streaming children by ability rather than age and calling on the poet, Benjamin Zephaniah she inspires children to read. The series exposes the scale of childhood illiteracy in the UK and raises serious questions about how we teach our kids to read, the quality of leadership in schools and the extent to which our education system is failing children in the poorest areas.
The Last Chance Kids Debate will give you an opportunity to see extracts from the programmes and debate the issue raised by them. The debate will be chaired by Alex Thompson, Channel 4 News, and will include contributions from a distinguished panel including
The debate will start at 6.30pm will and conclude at 7.45. Please arrive 6.15pm for 6.30pm. You are invited to stay afterwards to watch a transmission of a special Dispatches programme which explores the wider societal impact of illiteracy. This starts at 8pm.
